ElevateHER is a DEI focused global initiative launched in 2023 by our COO, Carina Filek. It was created with an aim to reduce the gender gap and minimise workplace discrimination; not just at Elevate Global, but throughout the events and marketing industry in general. According to McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace 2024 report, only 29% of C-suite positions are held by women (McKinsey, 2024). We want to change that.

One of the seven core pillars that make up ElevateHER is – Supporting the Next Generation. This is about encouraging and empowering the future next generation of young women in the events industry as they embark on their career paths.

We wanted to bring this to life by providing hands-on experience for students. Hollie, a 3rd year Sociology, Social Policy and Crime student at the University of Leeds, joined Elevate Global in July 2024 as part of her placement year to work as a Project Coordinator. With lots of relevant experience from her data-centric course, she supports the Impact team by analysing specific data points suited to the individual needs of the client, forming various bespoke reports.

We sat down with Hollie to hear about her career ambitions, her placement experience, and how working at Elevate Global is helping her take the next step.

1. What attracted you to work at Elevate Global for your placement year?

“I was drawn to Elevate Global for my placement year because of its people-oriented approach and strong focus on creating meaningful connections. The company’s global presence offered exciting opportunities to work on diverse campaigns, gaining valuable insights into different markets. Additionally, I was eager to develop my analytical skills in a data-driven environment, where I could contribute to measuring campaign success and driving impactful results.”

2. How has your time at Elevate Global influenced your views on working in the events industry - and more specifically working as a woman in the events industry?

“My time at Elevate Global has given me valuable insights on global companies, showing me how large-scale events operate, and the level of co-ordination required to make them successful. The fast-paced nature of the industry has been character building, pushing me to adapt quickly and solve problems effectively. I’ve had incredible opportunities for networking, connecting with professionals across different teams and learning from their experiences. This has given me greater confidence in my abilities to work with other teams.

As a woman in the industry, I’ve experienced both personal and work-based growth, developing resilience and skills that will benefit me throughout my career. I’ve also been fortunate to work under inspiring leadership, which has reinforced the importance of strong, supportive role models in this space.”

3. Have there been any specific moments or projects during your placement that have helped you feel supported as someone starting out in a more corporate environment?

“One of the most impactful projects during my placement has been a highly data-driven US campaign that I work on weekly. The project comes with tight deadlines and the need for complete accuracy, creating a high-pressure environment that has challenged me significantly. While it has been intense at times, this experience has been a huge learning curve, pushing me to develop my problem-solving skills and work efficiently under pressure.

Despite the challenges, the support from my team has been invaluable. I’ve learned to communicate any issues or concerns with both clients and colleagues, which has boosted my confidence in handling difficult situations. This project has also helped me to develop professionally in ways I wouldn’t have experienced prior to my role at Elevate, giving me the skills and confidence to excel in future roles within the industry.”

4. How has Elevate Global helped you navigate any challenges you’ve faced as a woman in a professional setting?

“Elevate Global has provided a supportive environment that has helped me navigate challenges as a woman in a professional setting. Working in a fast-paced, data-driven role, I’ve faced high-pressure situations that required precision and confidence. However, the inspiring leadership and encouragement from my team have empowered me to trust my abilities and voice my ideas.

Through networking opportunities and collaboration with different teams, I’ve gained the confidence to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, ensuring my contributions are always valued.”

5. As someone just starting their career, what advice would you give to other people entering the events or similar industries?

“My advice to anyone entering the events or similar industries is to not be afraid to reach out for help. If you’re unsure about something, ask for clarification – even multiple times if needed. It’s better to take the time to fully understand a task than to make avoidable mistakes.

Also, don’t feel pressured to impress everyone at once, you’re not superhuman. Focus on accuracy and consistency in your work, as that will speak for itself. Engaging with other teams to gain a broader rationale behind your work will also help you make more informed decisions. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that transparency and honesty with clients go a long way in building strong professional relationships. If challenges arise, being upfront and solution-focused strengthens client rapport and trust.

Lastly, never hesitate to ask for support when you need it, whether from colleagues, managers, or other teams. Everyone started somewhere, and seeking guidance is a sign of growth, not weakness.”

6. What are your key takeaways from your placement year so far?

“I have gained invaluable skills, particularly in Excel, allowing me to work more efficiently with data. I’ve also developed confidence in a professional environment, which has been a significant shift for me. Prior to this role, I had a strong fear of rejection, but facing challenges head-on has helped me overcome that fear and grow in resilience. This role has also sharpened my ability to think on my feet and handle unexpected challenges effectively.

I’ve learned how to communicate at different levels, whether with colleagues or clients, ensuring that my messaging is clear and professional. Another major takeaway has been understanding how to structure and prioritise my work. Managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment has taught me the importance of planning, organisation, and meeting deadlines without compromising on accuracy.

Overall, this role has significantly strengthened my character, and I am incredibly grateful for the growth it has given me. I look forward to applying this resilience and confidence to the remainder of my university degree, enhancing my academic writing, and bringing a more assured approach to my work. Beyond academics, I am eager to carry these skills into a broader professional setting, ensuring I continue to develop and thrive in future opportunities.”

7. What changes or initiatives would you like to see that could further support the next generation of women in the workplace?

“I believe it would be beneficial for women in leadership roles to take further active approaches in mentoring and sharing their professional journeys. I feel this would provide valuable insights, while also inspiring career paths and a sense of possibility for the next generation. Hearing firsthand how successful women navigated challenges and overcame barriers can be incredibly empowering and inspire confidence.

Also, creating a stronger support system for women’s health and those who have caring responsibilities in the workplace. I believe a more flexible approach to working hours and environments would allow women to balance their personal lives with their professional aspirations, ultimately empowering them to continue their impactful work while also improving their overall wellbeing.

By encouraging an environment focused on work-life balance and support for both women’s health and those with caring responsibilities, it can ensure that women are equipped to thrive without having to choose between their career and personal responsibilities. I believe this would contribute to a more positive and inclusive workplace culture, where women can continue to excel and reach their full potential.”

8. How have you been personally impacted by the ElevateHER programme?

“It was a huge struggle searching for placement opportunities in technology, until I came across Elevate and all it has to offer, including The ElevateHER initiative. With a focus on supporting the next generation and women in technology, I felt that this role would compliment both my beliefs and my academic abilities perfectly.

Working on The ElevateHER report has been an incredible opportunity to understand barriers to career growth in women. It was a wake-up call when understanding that 36% of women believe they have equal opportunities for career progression, in comparison to 67% of men.

As a result of the ElevateHER initiative, encouraging senior leaders to support junior members through networking and attending events, I had the incredible opportunity to attend International Confex. This experience allowed me to gain deeper insights into the events industry, and I particularly enjoyed attending talks on technology development in events, which perfectly aligns with my role at Elevate. The experience not only expanded my industry knowledge but also reinforced my enthusiasm for continuous learning and professional growth. I am truly grateful for ElevateHER creating these opportunities and empowering me to develop and flourish in my career.”
