Formula 1 has become one of the most sophisticated environments for experiential marketing in the world.
From interactive fan zones and AI-powered experiences to premium hospitality and large-scale retail operations, Formula 1 offers valuable lessons for any motorsport brand looking to create more meaningful fan engagement
As championships such as MotoGP, Formula E and the FIA World Endurance Championship continue to grow globally, many of the activation strategies used in Formula 1 can be adapted across other motorsport championships and events.
It’s no longer just about visibility
The days of passive sponsorship are fading. Modern Formula 1 audiences expect experiences that bring them closer to the action, which is why the most successful activations focus on participation rather than promotion.
For example, Heineken’s Podium Wall gave visitors the chance to step onto a replica podium and capture a memorable photo opportunity which encourages interaction and social media sharing.
Similarly, American Express developed the Amex Racing Club; an interactive space open to all fans featuring mini-games, content creator zones, giveaways, and immersive fan experiences that encourage visitors to spend more time engaging with the brand throughout race weekend.

Technology creates new ways to connect
Technology is becoming an increasingly important part of Formula 1 brand activations. Lenovo’s Race To Create campaign is a wonderful example of how brands can extend engagement beyond the track itself.
The campaign invited fans around the world to design their own AI-generated Formula 1 liveries through an interactive online platform, with designs brought to life through augmented reality experiences and personalised racing content. The activation blurred the line between digital and physical engagement, allowing fans to become active participants in the brand experience rather than passive spectators.
For motorsport brands, this highlights the growing importance of creating experiences that extend beyond the event and continue generating engagement long after race day.
Data capture is as valuable as brand awareness
Many Formula 1 activations now incorporate competitions, registrations, interactive games, QR-led experiences, and digital engagement tools that encourage participation while capturing data as brands increasingly want measurable engagement, audience insights, and opportunities to build future relationships with attendees.
When done correctly, data capture feels like a natural part of the fan journey rather than an interruption to it, and the result is an activation that delivers an incredible experience for fans, as well as valuable business outcomes.
Beyond attendance figures, brands are increasingly measuring dwell time, engagement rates, content creation, lead generation and sales outcomes to understand the full impact of their activations.
Fan zones are where it’s at
Having supported fan engagement activations across motorsport events, we’ve seen firsthand that the most successful experiences rarely focus on a single touchpoint. Instead, they blend entertainment, technology, hospitality, content creation, retail and engagement into a connected experience.
This was evident in our activations for brands including LEGO, eBay and Aramco. These activations combined elements such as racing simulators, pit stop challenges and selfie experiences within large fan zones to create experiences that attracted audiences and gave them reason to participate and spend time within the experience.
Hospitality is part of the brand experience
Formula 1’s premium hospitality offering has become a significant part of the fan experience. Guests purchasing premium packages expect exceptional service, seamless operations and exclusive access throughout the event.
Our support of Paddock Club hospitality at the Austin Grand Prix involved registration services, guest support, wayfinding and food and beverage delivery, helping ensure guests received the level of service expected from one of Formula 1’s most prestigious hospitality environments.
Hospitality isn’t simply about entertaining guests, it’s an opportunity to build relationships and reinforce brand perception in a premium setting.
Engagement needs to feel authentic
Fans can quickly identify experiences that have been created solely for promotional purposes, so the strongest activations should provide genuine value.
This was evident through our work supporting Red Bull Fan Park activations, which featured virtual reality experiences, Formula 1 car displays and hospitality promotions. The activation generated more than 2,500 fan engagements and contributed to over 100 hospitality package sales by creating experiences audiences actively wanted to participate in.
The success came from enhancing the fan experience first, with commercial outcomes following naturally.
Retail is key
Modern race weekends are increasingly becoming retail destinations in their own right. Merchandise sales allow fans to take part of the experience home while creating valuable revenue opportunities for rights holders, teams and partners.
Through our Formula 1 retail operations partnership with stichd, we’ve supported merchandise sales across 19 countries, delivering more than 20,000 shifts across almost 300 live event days.
At this scale, retail becomes a critical component of the overall fan experience, requiring careful planning, efficient staffing and seamless customer service.

Choose the right people
No activation succeeds without the right people delivering it. Behind every fan zone, hospitality suite, retail space or sponsor activation is a team responsible for creating positive guest experiences and ensuring operations run smoothly.
Even the most creative activation can fall short if the delivery doesn’t match the concept. Fans remember the people they interact with just as much as the experience itself, making recruitment, training and briefing critical to the success of any activation.
Depending on the activation, this can include:
- Brand ambassadors
- Hospitality staff
- Product demonstrators
- Retail teams
- Registration teams
- Guest services staff
- Team leaders
- Data capture teams
These frontline teams often become the face of the brand, shaping how audiences perceive the experience and determining whether engagement opportunities translate into meaningful results.
Conclusion
Formula 1 provides a clear blueprint for successful motorsport activations. The brands generating the strongest results are creating meaningful interactions that combine entertainment, technology, hospitality and human connection.
While every championship and audience is different, the underlying principle remains the same: give fans something worth participating in, sharing and remembering.
