How to become a TikTok influencer

It’s easy to think that simply recording a funny or aesthetically pleasing video will make you a TikTok influencer overnight. While this might be the case for some, the reality of becoming a true social media star requires a lot more work.

For those who don’t know what TikTok is, it’s a short-form video-sharing app. You can think of it as a bite-size version of YouTube and, while it’s often associated with a Gen Z audience, it’s quickly gaining momentum amongst other age groups as well.

When it comes to gaining fame on the app, it’s not exactly easy. The platform is expected to reach 1.8 million monthly active users by the end of this year, making it a competitive battleground for aspiring influencers. So, what can you do to give your content the best chance of standing out?

It’s less about finding short-lived trends to follow (although these are important, as we’ll explain later on) and more about consistent and strategic content creation and planning. With that in mind, let’s look at some steps you can take.

Get to know TikTok’s algorithm

Although it may sound like something you need a maths degree for, getting to know the TikTok algorithm is easier than you think.

Simply put, it’s a recommendation system that decides what videos will appear on your ‘For You’ page. That means that all users will see different videos depending on their personal viewing preferences and interests.

The longer someone spends watching a video, the more likely they are to receive similar content in future. The same goes for videos they interact with via likes, comments, shares etc. But how does this impact influencers? Well, it’s something you should always keep in mind when creating content. To increase your views and shareability, think about what your audience base is most likely to find surprising or relatable rather than simply mirroring what others are doing.

Research your target audience

Although market research doesn’t sound particularly exciting, the good news is you’ve probably done a lot of it if you already use the app.

Using TikTok will help you become familiar with how it works, who your potential audience is and what other creators are doing, allowing you to know what works (and what doesn’t).

Find a niche

Having a niche is important for succeeding in any type of content creation, not just on TikTok. From knitting and plant care to cottagecore and roller skating, whatever you can think of, there’s probably a community out there for it, no matter how specific.

But finding a niche is just the beginning. For example, if you want to become a makeup influencer, you’ll need to think of ways to make yourself stand out amongst the millions of other videos using that hashtag. Perhaps you specialise in making homemade beauty products, or maybe your focus is on horror makeup – wherever your passion lies, there will always be an audience to share it with.

Jump on trends

TikTok trends are how the app became so popular in the first place. A trend can be a sound, hashtag, dance or challenge that many people want to recreate themselves, resulting in it going viral.

It takes just one prominent influencer to pick up a trend for it to blow up in a matter of hours, meaning you can’t scroll more than a few videos before finding another version.

By hopping on a trend (and even putting your own spin on it), you’re creating content that will immediately resonate with people.

Be consistent

Being consistent will help you succeed in many places, and TikTok isn’t any different. In fact, TikTok itself recommends consistency as a secret to success.

Although this includes having a regular content schedule, it also extends to the formatting and production of your videos, as this is what will help people familiarise themselves with your brand. However, it shouldn’t stop you from experimenting with new formats from time to time. After all, the only sure-fire way to build a strategy that works is through trial and error.

Interact with your followers

Becoming an influencer is about more than just making great content, it’s about building a community. If you want your audience to engage with you, you need to promote a two-way conversation. You can do this by liking, sharing and commenting on other people’s videos as well as your own.

What’s unique about TikTok is that you can reply to comments with a whole new video rather than just text, which is a great way to keep the interest going and respond to a reoccurring question or comment in one go.

Create great content

Whether the content you create is educational, entertaining, or just downright wacky, the wonderful thing about TikTok is that there will always be an audience for it.

When it comes to making your first video, there are plenty of great sources to help you get started, from websites listing the latest trends to guides on how to create your very first video. Don’t forget to pay attention to hashtags as well.

So, now that you understand how TikTok works and what to do to give yourself the best chance of building your own community, all you need to do is to get creating!
